Look for Ways to Add Nature to Your Day
Spending time outside in nature, even if it’s just a few minutes in the back yard, can do so much to improve your mood. If you’ve got a nature trail nearby or even just a park, consider going there for a little while to simply enjoy the natural world for a bit. Something else to consider is bringing a little bit of nature home with you. Check out some cut flowers the next time you’re grocery shopping and bring home a small bundle. They’re easy to take care of and they can make you smile when you look at them.
Smile a Little Bit, Just for You
The act of smiling, even when you’re not completely in the mood for it, can affect your entire body as well as how you feel. When you smile, your brain gets the message from those nerves and muscles involved in the act of smiling that you are indeed smiling. From there, the brain sends out endorphins, which are happy chemicals that can make you feel happier. So even if you don’t feel like smiling, trying even a fake one on just for yourself can help you to feel a little boost.
Reach out to a Friend
Caregivers often have a tough time maintaining friendships, mainly because they’re so busy and often so pressed for time. Take the time to reach out to a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. The benefit that you get from checking in with someone you care about is one that pays off immediately. You also have the added plus of talking to someone who truly cares about what is going on with you.
Do Something Just for Fun
You probably don’t take advantage of much free time to engage in activities that just delight you or entertain your brain. Activities like reading, watching a favorite show, or listening to music while you do nothing else can really give you a huge boost in mood. Try to remember what you enjoy doing just for fun and then spend some time doing just that.
Consider a Massage
Massage can do wonders for your body and for your emotions. Even a half hour massage can release tension in your muscles and give you an endorphin boost as well. Booking a regular massage gives you time away from caregiving and it also allows you to experience the benefits of massage on an ongoing basis.
As a caregiver you need to take advantage of whatever situations give you a little extra morale. It’s tough to be a caregiver and when something gives you joy you need to spend time relishing that.
