Celebrating your own accomplishments is a really important part of accepting yourself as a caregiver and the contributions that you’re making to your senior’s life.
You Might Be Your Biggest Cheerleader
It’s really tough to get appreciation and kudos as a family caregiver. The rest of your family may not fully understand what you’re going through as a caregiver and that means that they don’t understand your wins. Your senior may not be able to show you appreciation, either, and this can feel lonely and leave you unfulfilled to some extent. But you can be your own cheerleader and you might just need to do so.
Self-appreciation Undoes Stress
When you’re appreciating yourself for what you do, you’re going to find that it battles stress quite efficiently. The reasoning behind that is that even if you’re not getting those pats on the back elsewhere, you’re noticing what you’re doing. That matters and it can make a big difference on how you view what you do as a caregiver.
You Might not See Accomplishments at First
Honestly, it’s not so easy to see your own accomplishments at first. Society trains us that it’s bad to “toot our own horns,” and that’s what this can feel like at first. But is anyone else tooting your horn? Start to jot down everything that feels like a win. You might have convinced your senior to eat something healthy rather than a sugar-filled snack. That is a big win. Write it down.
Keeping a Journal Helps
You need somewhere to keep all these accomplishments and a journal is the perfect spot. It doesn’t have to be a fancy journal, either. Something as simple as a pocket-sized spiral notebook can do the trick for you. What it does need to do is be easy to use and easy to update. If you’re afraid to write in a beautiful journal, that does not do you any good at all. Make it accessible and useful for now. Pretty can come later.
Self-worth and self-esteem ultimately come from within you. No one else can provide those for you. Taking charge of your own self-affirmation is a powerful way to boost your self-worth and self-esteem in a healthy way that gives you big results.
